The point of change is helping people understand what it means and why it matters. It also means creating space for people to ask questions without fear of reprisal or mockery.

When I consult, we begin by establishing language and how societal norms have shifted. We then get into what gender, identity and sexuality mean, drawing upon specific examples and engaging the audience to ask questions, share thoughts and come to an understanding in a safe, tolerant and patient context.

Having these explorations before creative work begins is essential. There is no way can shift cultural expectations and move the needle of inclusion and diversity without a true understanding of what makes up a modern society, of how people understand one another and themselves.

This work informs all creative going forward, giving each staff member a list of terms, resources to turn to and my email so they can reach out privately with any additional thoughts or concerns.
